Plan B Tedx talk

1) Plan B strongly believes in giving young people the opportunity to make something of themselves. He believes in equal chances, depending on ones talent rather than their background whether it be working class or middle class. He doesn't judge someone on their grades or how well they do at school but instead the knowledge they have gained through learning. Plan B particularly focuses on his story of how he got kicked out of school in Year 10 at the start of his talk. He uses his success story as inspiration today for youths who feel they cannot achieve something or feel they are an outcast from society. He inspires kids like this because he has been in that position and knows how it feels to feel as though you are worth nothing. However from trial and improvement he was given the opportunity to pursue a music career and the film directing career he has today. He also understands that lower class families do not always give maternal love to children and most are single parents or drug/alcohol addicts. Therefore instead of pushing these kids away they should be loved and encouraged by others to go forward and have a bright future as they have not been shown otherwise.

2) In my opinion the Tedx lecture is not only targeted at those who can benefit from inspiration and motivation from his lecture, but also those who do not understand the reasons for the way some youths are and behave. Using a socio demographic scale the target audience for inspiration would be a C2-E group. This is the working and lower class who are underprivileged in terms of backgrounds and living. However i would also argue that this lecture targets a A-C1 socio demographic group as they tend to misunderstand youths. This lecture therefore allows them to have an incite of real life stories of youths that have pushed them to end up in the situations they are in today. Using the uses and gratifications model, upper and middle class people can use this lecture as escapism from their own luxury lives. They tend not to be used to having such an intimate talk with someone who has come from a poor background to the success they are today. Moving on to psychographics, this lecture targets strugglers. Strugglers are typically lower demographics and seek escape. They feel alienated in which youths similarly do as some feel an outcast from society. This lecture also targets reformers as they seek enlightenment and freedom from restrictions. Most youths end up in trouble with authorities, simply because they seek freedom. Although the main target audience for this lecture is lower class youths who relate to Plan B's past situations, it also targets those who do not have an understanding of why youths were involved in the riot's for example. Most feel a restriction and in order to break boundaries they do not follow the rules and mostly laws. Plan B's lecture and film relates to all audiences, whether they can relate and have an understanding already or learn something new.

3) Plan B believes that the media encourage moral panic on youths. Stanley Cohen established a theory of moral panics where feelings and ideologies are expressed in a society which causes a disturbance to social order. There are 3 stages to moral panic: occurrence and signification, wider social implications and social control. For example during the London riots, stage 1 was the actual event where youths were stealing and creating social disorder by breaking laws and unnecessary violence. Stage 2 consisted on the mass media spreading the news through newspapers, television, radio etc. Stage 3 is where youths were all given a bad name and certain groups were stereotyped. This mainly consisted of lower class boys and girls who were targeted for participating and causing the London riots. Plan B does not appreciate the fact that youths are seen as an outcast as it limits their chances of success and future opportunities.

Ill Manors behind the scenes

1) Plan B's intentions were to represent his own personal life and show the movie in an autobiographical way. He wanted to bridge the gap between audiences, those who can relate and face similar situations and those who do not understand the reasons behind the things youths do. Plan B also felt as though youths are misunderstood, therefore he showed character consequences in the film so audiences can be educated on young people more as most are misunderstood.

2) Plan B started out in the music industry and some of the characters in the film were used in his previous videos that were produced for film festivals. They were then recognised for their acting and people became more interested in them, who they were and what they do. Plan B decided to use Ed in Ill Manors, who he had used for a previous music video he shot. After Plan B's experience of short films he decided he wanted to write a script after the riot's which was successful and shortly turned into Ill  Manors. The film was low budget which was perfect for the film's representation as it shows a true image of the characters in the film and the themes/messages.

3) The target audience initially targets youths who are of a lower class and can relate to the situations that take place in the film. However, Plan B wanted to target it at those who do not understand why youths were involved in the riots and the reasons behind what they do. For example, people who end up in drug use and prostitution do it because they had no support to tell them they had a choice like others or feel as thought they are outcasts from society. Ill Manors can be used to bridge the gap between those in society who are lower class and face these situations, and the middle class who do not understand these situations.

4) Plan B's intention was to represent the misunderstood youth society and show unaware people that there are reasons behind the way people are and what they do. He made it clear in the film making documentary that he used locations in East London, Forest Gate where he had grown up as he had a real understanding of the area and felt it fit perfectly with the film and characters. These locations were all shown in the film as that is where it was set. It also gives Some of the smaller characters live in those locations in East London. Therefore they are just every day people who are not playing an act or role in the film, but just being and speaking to how they do in real life, giving Ill Manor a sense of realism. Plan B wanted Ill Manors to be an inspiration to those who face similar situations, as he starred in the film at the very end and a glimpse of him driving Aaron away from his troubled life and into a new one. This shows people that there is hope and they can have a happy ending if they get themselves out of bad situations.

Ill Manors trailer

1) Film trailers usually consist of typical codes and conventions that use symbolic codes to show what is beneath the surface. Characters actions show how they are feeling, which are shown in film trailers to suggest the feel and possibly genre to an audience. Conventions are the way of doing something. Film trailers show the main climax's of the upcoming movie, however do not reveal all to interest the audience.

2) Film trailers are usually distributed by the same studio's that produced them as well as it's trailers. Studio producer examples are Warner Bros and trailer examples are Blockbusters.

3) In Ill Manors, trailer conventions are used to reveal interesting parts of the movie to the audience, but not to give away the full story. It introduces the stars of the film to target a specific audience who would be interested in those characters/actors. The music used in the trailer is original and written by Plan B, as he used every song to tell a different story. The voice over of the narrator, Plan B is used to tell the story through the trailer using a song. The fast pace music builds tension and creates drama.

4) Ill Manor is aimed at a teenage/young adult audience of a C2, D and E socio dempgraphic. This is because it is set in a low class area and presents those particular types of characters, therefor audiences can relate to it. The unique selling point of Ill Manors is that it uses original Plan B songs to help tell the story throughout the film of each character. This technique does appeal to the audience because the rap genre is popular with the target audience. The scenes do give away clues about the narrative as it includes drugs, prostitution, criminality, all themes in the film. The voice over also says 'this is Ill Manors, I am the narrator'. This clearly tells the audience what is going on and guides them through the trailer. The main stars are visible as a clip of each of them is shown in the trailer. At the end of the trailer it shows it is directed by Ben Drew and has the release date in cinemas of 6th June. The narrator Plan B's voice-over is used at the start to introduce the clip.

5) The genre of the film has been represented through numerous ways including: characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing.

The main characters are mostly of a teenage to young adult age. They are also from a lower class background and a C2-E socio demographic group. Using the uses and gratifications model, one could argue that the characters are in groups of: pleasure, sexual stimulation and escapism from their own lives. Characters of these needs link to a British drama genre.

The settings used in the Ill Manors trailer use quite run down and lower class area. The places that the scenes are shot consist of small houses, which are the characters homes, alley ways showing prostitution, cheap chicken shops, emphasising the non-luxury life. The genre has been represented through the use of settings and implying the drama feel.

The lighting used in the trailer uses black and white to represent a flashback. It also uses moments of dim lighting of Kirby, to represent the mysterious silhouette. The dark lighting creates suspense and mysetious, linking to the crime drama genre. When the lighting is bright, it shows the happy and more positive moments, representing characters moods.

The trailer uses quite dim colours, black, blue and grey etc. This represents the mood of the drama as it is not a pleasant story, and has serious topics involved in it.

The music at the start of the trailer is Plan B narrating the story. It then cuts to violent dialogue of raised voices and shouting, then fast paced music. The non-diegetic fast paced music creates tension, fitting with the crime drama genre.

The camerawork uses a range of close ups of characters to show their facial expressions and moods. It also uses many long-medium shots to show the characters. A low angle shot of some characters is shown to emphasisie their authority and status. Tracking flash backs shows the movement in time. The constant show of the fast moving cars represent the speed of the story line and the crime drama genre.

Ill Manors review

Plan

Director: The Sweeney, Turnout, Adulthood, Harry Brown, 4.3.2.1.

Main stars: Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press, Anoushka Mond, Keef Coggins, Eloise Smyth. Most of these cast members have starred in other films.

Plot: Ill Manors is a British crime drama that revolves around the lives of eight main characters. The film is set over a course of seven days where everyone is fighting for respect. The film focuses on characters circles of violence as they struggle to survive in the streets. There are six original songs by Plan B and each story is represented by a different rap song. The film goes from tragedies to characters lives improving towards the end.

Characters: The main characters-Aaron, Ed, Katya, Michelle, Kirby and Jody are played by:
Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press, Anoushka Mond, Keef Coggins and Eloise Smyth. In my opinion the quality of the acting was good as everyone stuck to their role and demonstrated the personalities well, to help tell the story.

Genre: Ill Manors is a British crime drama and definitely fit my expectations. This was due to the cover of the film, where the image portrays the genre of the film. The mood is very urban, with a Kidulthood/Adulthood type of feel.

Soundtrack: I enjoyed the soundtrack, it was very unique and every song linked to a different character's story. It made the story more believable and realistic as the audience could relate to it.

Audience: Ill Manors is aimed at a teenage/young adult audience, possible of a C2, D, E socio demographic. This is because it is set in a low class area and presents those characters, therefore audiences can relate to it.

Review
Ill Manors (2012) is directed by Ben Drew, who has produced similar films in the past such as Adulthood. He is also known to have produced other films including: The Sweeney, Turnout, Harry Brown and 4.3.2.1. Ben Drew was initially a rapper who wrote his own songs and led him to the opportunity to star in Adulthood. His rap music and one particular song ‘kids’ then began to drive his success which made him into the successful director he is today.

Ill Manors is a unique British crime drama that revolves around the lives of eight main characters. The film is set over a course of seven days where everyone is fighting for respect. The film focuses on characters circles of violence as they struggle to survive in the streets. There are six original songs by Plan B and each story is represented by a different rap song. The film goes from tragedies to characters’ lives improving towards the end. The characters consist of an ex drug dealer named Kirby, who has just been released from prison. A thug named Ed who searches for his missing phone. Michelle is a drug addict who is involved in prostitution. Jake is the youngest and finds himself drawn to the local gang. Chris seeks revenge due to the murder of his younger sister. Katya is trying to escape from the house she is locked up in with her new born baby. Finally, the main protagonist Aaron is trying to do the right thing and stick by his morals.

The main characters-Aaron, Ed, Katya, Michelle, Kirby and Jody are played by: Riz Ahmed, Ed Skrein, Natalie Press, Anoushka Mond, Keef Coggins and Eloise Smyth. In my opinion the quality of the acting was good as everyone stuck to their role and demonstrated the personalities well, to help tell the story. The actors were believable and all shared similar characteristics. The characters live in a rundown area where most people are drug addicts and suffer from abuse.

Ill Manors is a British crime drama and definitely fit my expectations. This was due to the cover of the film, where the image portrays the genre of the film. The mood is very urban, with a Kidulthood/Adulthood type of feel. I felt as though the film was quite explicit to drugs, sex and violence, however was realistic and gave a true picture of some people’s standard of living that is not always made aware of.

I enjoyed the soundtrack, it was very unique and every song linked to a different character's story. It made the story more believable and realistic as the audience could relate to it. When the songs were played they told a story of each individual character. A series of flashbacks were then shown of that character as a child growing up. The reason for this was to compare their life to a baby to how they are now and emphasise the change in development. The audience are also able to relate to the reasons of why they have turned out the way they are, some show neglect as a child. Particularly Chris, who is shown to be locked in a basement as a child and is given a scar on his face calved by a knife which he still has when he is older.

Ill Manors is aimed at a teenage/young adult audience, possible of a C2, D, E socio demographic. This is because it is set in a low class area and presents those characters, therefore audiences can relate to it. An A/B socio demographic audience would most likely not be interested in this particular film as it shows a lot of graphic drug use and violence. Using Blumler and Katz (1974) uses and gratifications theory, I believe Ill Manors audience would fit into an entertainment category and possibly relate to others. It would be used for entertainment as people may find the story line interesting and different to what they usually expect in a film. Also, people who suffer from similar situations as the characters whether that is drug use or physical abuse may be able to relate to the characters and even feel as though the characters can relate to them and their lives.

Overall, I felt as though Ill Manors was overly explicit, but portrayed a message that many young people can learn from and hopefully aspire to do the right thing as a lot of consequences were exposed in the film.

MEST2 Progress report - 16th January

Work completed since 6th January:

Script, story board, shot list, mise-en-scene. We have had two meetings with Mr Halsey where we all received feedback on the pre production tasks we have been working on. He also gave us ways to improve such as font for the script and following a more professional layout, found on BBC writers room. He also explained the storyboard should be clear and represent the storyline and the shot list should be detailed and used when filming as a guideline to our shots. For mise-en-scene sir suggested we visit the actual locations we intend to use, in this case central London, and take pictures then follow this with a thorough analysis. We also met up (Vinesh, Ishan and I) and spoke about ideas for our production and worked on script ideas more.

Incomplete pre-production tasks:

The only step left for our pre production left is to change the font of the script to make it look more professional and realistic. Also, mise-en-scene images and analysis needs to be completed. Costumes for characters still need to be decided as we are going for a middle-class look, so suits and casual smart dresses is how characters will be dressed.

Next steps/action plan

The next step for our group is to start and complete the filming along with editing the whole production. We aim to start filming by next week and getting our shots done along with a photo shoot alongside it for our print work. I plan to start my print work alongside the production.

Date filming will be complete:

Sunday 2nd February

Date editing will be complete:

Monday 10th February

Tuesday 14 January 2014

Media mock exam

Grade D

WWW: Good use of media terminology in sound/editing question.

EBI: Audience question needs theory (uses and gratifications) and psychographics-re-do.

I believe the audience for Frozen Planet using a socio-demographics scale would focus on a C1, C2, D and E audience. As the programmes purpose is to educate, these particular audience groups would be interested. An A and B group would be most likely to be too busy on a Wednesday at 9pm so would not be interested. I believe it targets families as it is a very family oriented documentary, suitable for all ages (including children). In terms of psychographics using Young and Rubicam's theory, I believe this programme targets Mainstreamers as the show is on at a peak time. This specific category of people tend to follow 'norms' and do not like media products too offensive. Frozen Planet does educate, inform and entertain it's audience. Moving on to uses and gratifications, Blumler and Katz (1974) I believe this documentary would fit into both a personal relationships and surveillance category. Personal relationships because as the show is quite family orientated, it can be used for social interaction of family life. Also, surveillance because Frozen Planet represents weather reports from the Antarctic.

As it is informative on nature animals and global areas (Antarctic), it educates successfully. Frozen Planet was the most watched natural history series in the UK as this episode hit 7 million viewers, emphasising the widespread audience.

The show is broadcasted on BBC One HD and BBC iPlayer, usually a C1, C2 on a socio-demographic audience can afford high definition and online streaming. So, this may be the main target audience Frozen Planet focuses on.
